On February 2, 2026, NYU’s Schack Institute of Real Estate hosted its 9th Annual Conference on Sustainable Real Estate, bringing together industry leaders, policymakers, academics, and students to tackle one of the most pressing questions in the built environment: how do climate, community, and capital come together to build a more resilient world ?

Marc Norman, the Larry and Klara Silverstein Chair and Associate Dean at Schack, co-hosted the event and set the tone with a clear-eyed assessment of where the industry stands: “The real estate industry is the implementation vehicle for sustainability innovation. Even with some current reversals and headwinds, it is clear that the efficiencies built into climate solutions create better developments and better deals for tenants, lenders, and investors.”

Norman positioned the conference not as a feel-good forum but as a working debate, one designed to produce actionable outcomes. “This conference brings together industry players and innovators driving actionable solutions for a resilient future,” he said. “Our Conference on Sustainable Real Estate is meant for debates amongst industry leaders, policymakers, academics, and students on how the built environment can drive measurable change.” Sessions spanned energy markets, adaptive reuse, climate risk, workforce housing, and sustainable finance, with organisations including Tishman Speyer, Vornado Realty Trust, Wells Fargo, and the U.S. EPA in attendance. In a notable first, NYU Schack students served as emcees and panel moderators throughout the day – a signal that the next generation of real estate professionals is already being shaped by the sustainability imperative.
