Marc Norman, Associate Dean at NYU’s Schack Institute of Real Estate, took centre stage as emcee at Commercial Observer’s 3rd Annual Breakthrough Awards, bringing his trademark blend of academic perspective and industry fluency to one of commercial real estate’s most prominent annual gatherings. Held at 7 World Trade Center in December 2025, the evening celebrated the year’s most significant deals, innovations, and teams across the sector, with Norman helping frame the conversation throughout the night.
The awards spanned a wide range of categories, from office-to-residential conversions and sustainability projects to AI-powered proptech and public-private partnerships, painting a picture of an industry actively reinventing itself. Blackstone dominated proceedings, taking home four awards across office, retail, industrial, and non-bank financing categories. One Wall Street, Macklowe Properties’ landmark office-to-residential conversion and the New York debut of Parisian department store Printemps, claimed two Tech & Innovation prizes. Norman marked the occasion with characteristic wit, quipping that he spoke “on behalf of everyone here” in wanting to get on the VIP list at Printemps.
The broader sweep of winners, spanning adaptive reuse, transit-oriented development, and AI investment tools, reflected the themes Norman regularly engages with in his research and teaching. His role as emcee at the industry’s showcase event speaks to his standing as one of commercial real estate’s most respected voices, bridging the worlds of academia and practice in a room full of New York’s most influential dealmakers.
